Here in Denver we’ve been getting hit with smoky skies due to an abundance of wildfire activity from Canada to the front range. A clear uptake in symptoms related to asthma, cough, headaches, sinus congestion, general respiratory irritation, stress and anxiety has ensued for most everyone.
In Chinese Medicine, the qi that comes from the air we breathe is called, “Zong qi” or “Gathering qi.” This type of qi is formed in the lungs from the combination of the air we breathe, and the food we consume. When the air quality dips due to wildfires, your body needs extra care to combat the effects of poor air. Below are my go-to medicinals rooted in food, herbal medicine and acupuncture which have clinical properties to help protect and repair our respiratory systems in times of environmental distress:
Leafy greens + fresh vegetables
Eat in abundance: spinach, kale, swiss chard, broccoli, bell peppers, cucumbers, carrots, beets, zucchini, tomatoes - collectively provide essential vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, reduce oxidative stress + contain anti-inflammatory properties. Vegetables help to keep the body hydrated, protect respiratory tissue, support detoxification from pollutants and strengthen lung health.
Citrus + seasonal fruits
Double up on: berries, grapefruit, lemons, lime, oranges, cherries, peaches, pineapple - also collectively high in essential vitamins, (especially vitamin C which enhances immune system function) and are hydrating for maintaining healthy mucous membranes and respiratory function. Fresh fruit also reduces respiratory inflammation, can help to clear mucus, and aid in the protection and repair of cells damaged by pollutants.
Ginger & Turmeric
Always, always have these on hand: powerful antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties soothe irritated airways, protect cells, can help fight respiratory infection, and loosen mucus from the lungs to clear airways.
Water and herbal teas:
Staying hydrated is a must: teas such as mint, chamomile and chrysanthemum help keep your mucous membranes moist and flush out toxins.
Chinese herbal medicine + acupuncture:
Herbal medicinal formulas for respiratory health have existed for thousands of years. Top formulations contain mulberry, chrysanthemum, forsythia, mint and more to clear heat, stop cough, wheezing, generate body fluids, soothe thirst and restore the proper flow of lung qi.
Always consult with a board certified practitioner before beginning any herbal regimen.
Acupuncture modulates the immune system and systemically reduces inflammation by regulating the release of cytokines. (Also very important in the treatment of COVID symptoms). Think alleviation of cough, wheezing, asthma, phlegm production and general irritation of allergies, sinus congestions, headaches and itchy/watery eyes due to external pathogens. Acupuncture is also an effective modality to balance accompanying feelings of stress, fear, heat and anger.
Acupuncture also enhances blood circulation for overall respiratory function support, and via its effect on the autonomic nervous system (which regulates respiratory rate and depth), directly impacts lung capacity and function.
